Learning sociocultural aspects of English-speaking countries is also part of the curriculum of the English subject. Thus, we decided to take advantage of the carnival celebration that was taking part in our high school to help our students learn about the city of New York.
The teachers from the English Department dressed up as Statues of Liberty for the occasion, which motivated our students even more to deepen their knowledge about the city of New York. This amazing city has appeared in so many Hollywood films that our students already knew many things about it.
However, during the lessons, they had the chance of learning much more about the city landmarks, geography, and traditions. By using videos, presentations and other materials, they could feel the atmosphere of this crowded city - its day and night-time noise, its skyline, the smoky air going through...
As the song says, "I wanna wake up in a city that doesn't sleep". Who wouldn't? Without a doubt, many of our students ended up their lessons wishing to visit the city of New York while listening to the wonderful song by Frank Sinatra.
